Miriel the Pastor of Vows has been the only truly interesting character I've met thus far and imparted some degree of actual world building I could really get into. The random ghosts that say maybe 5 cryptic words mean nothing to me. I've traversed across a massive amount of the map, fought a good dozen or two bosses in catacombs, dungeons, etc and there's virtually zero context or development to any of it. It's a weird and fantastical world, but there's nothing explaining or providing context to why or what of anything. The absolute thread bare story elements and interactions with NPCs or just lore of any kind really robs the exploration for me. RDR2 as well is another great in world journal that could work amazingly here.ΔΆ0 hours in I just don't find the open world experience to be all that revelatory to be honest. It required the player to still figure everything out themselves, but let them jog their memory and keep a record of interactions to easily access. It was a great reference and being written in universe was amusing and clever. It provided some details, but was still messy being in sequential order and just logging info you were told and not dictating next steps. Morrowind had a brilliant Journal system that logged important events and conversations but was very in universe and not cleanly broken up into discreet quests. There's a massive breadth of options between having a dedicated hand-holdy quest log with markers and explicit instructions and having nothing at all. And in a world so big and open it's not remotely reasonable to expect people to just remember this kind of information. Having to take notes is pretty annoying and just breaks up the flow of gameplay. Most people are not going to keep or be used to having a note pad next to them to jot down info. I find the lack of a journal of some kind to be pretty annoying.
